South Brisbane is one of Brisbane’s most vibrant inner-city suburbs, located just 1.6 km south-west of the CBD on the southern bank of the Brisbane River. Bordered by West End, Highgate Hill, Woolloongabba, and Kangaroo Point, the suburb blends historic charm with cutting-edge urban renewal.
Once Brisbane’s original port and industrial district, South Brisbane was transformed by World Expo ’88, which paved the way for the creation of the South Bank Parklands, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), Queensland Museum, and the State Library of Queensland. Today, the area is recognised as one of Brisbane’s premier lifestyle and cultural destinations — a walkable, high-density precinct characterised by restaurants, entertainment, and premium apartment living.
According to the ABS, South Brisbane had a population of 14,292 in 2021, representing an extraordinary 98.6% increase since 2016. The suburb’s predominant age group is 20–29 years, reflecting its popularity among young professionals, students, and inner-city tenants.
