Ferny Grove is an established, leafy residential suburb approximately 15km north-west of the Brisbane CBD. Located on Brisbane’s outer north-western edge, it borders Ferny Hills, Keperra and Upper Kedron.
The area was originally known as Ferny Flats, a name that reflected the ferns once found throughout the district. The suburb later took its name from Ferny Grove railway station, which opened after the railway was extended through the area in the early twentieth century. Most large-scale residential development occurred from the late 1970s.
Ferny Grove combines a family-oriented suburban setting with convenient rail access, established schools and extensive green space. Its position near the foothills of the D’Aguilar Range gives it a greener, less urban feel than many suburbs a similar distance from the CBD.
Ferny Grove had a population of 5,871 in 2021, up from 5,725 in 2016, representing growth of 2.6%. The largest age group is 40–49 years, and couples with children are the most common household type.
Couples with children account for 46.5% of households, compared with 44.9% across Brisbane. Owner occupation is also high at 75.9%, reflecting the suburb’s strong family and long-term owner-occupier profile.
Professional occupations are the most common among residents. The age profile is broader than many inner-city suburbs, with relatively high proportions of both school-aged children and residents aged over 60.
Ferny Grove’s local shopping is centred around McGinn Road and Archdale Road, with everyday retail and services available in the area. Larger shopping centres are available nearby in Keperra and other north-western suburbs.
As Ferny Grove is predominantly residential, residents generally travel to nearby centres for a broader range of restaurants, cafés and entertainment.
Ferny Grove railway station is the terminus of the Ferny Grove line and a major drawcard for the suburb. Trains provide direct services to the Brisbane CBD, while bus routes connect Ferny Grove with surrounding suburbs.
Samford Road is the main arterial route through the area, providing road access toward Keperra, Mitchelton and the city, as well as west to Samford Valley.
Ferny Grove has several established schools, including Ferny Grove State School, Ferny Grove State High School and St Andrew’s Catholic School.
Ferny Grove State School dates back to 1875, while Ferny Grove State High School opened in 1980. Buyers purchasing for school access should confirm the current catchment and enrolment requirements for each property.
Ferny Grove is a leafy suburb located on the doorstep of Samford Conservation Park and D’Aguilar National Park. It contains 22 parks covering approximately 17.3% of the suburb.
Cyclists will enjoy the Ferny Grove Rail Trail which starts at the end of Lanita Road and meanders along an old railway line, ending in Samford Village.
Ferny Grove is primarily residential rather than a major employment centre. Many residents commute to the Brisbane CBD and employment areas across Brisbane’s north-west.
Local employment is concentrated around schools, retail, transport services and community facilities.
Buyer demand is generally strongest in quiet residential streets with well-presented homes, usable land and convenient access to schools, parks and the railway station. Larger blocks and renovated family homes can attract particularly strong owner-occupier interest.
Properties directly exposed to Samford Road may experience higher traffic noise. Homes close to the railway station and transport infrastructure may also be affected by noise or parking, although proximity to the station is a clear advantage for commuters.
Buyers should check flood and overland-flow mapping, bushfire and vegetation overlays, slope, retaining walls and easements for each property.
Detached houses dominate Ferny Grove, with family-sized suburban blocks common throughout the established parts of the suburb. Many older homes sit on blocks of around 600m² or more, although land size varies considerably by estate and street.
Townhouses and units make up a much smaller share of the market, so attached-dwelling sales data can be more volatile and should be interpreted with care.
A buyers agent in Ferny Grove can help compare individual streets and properties, assess recent comparable sales and identify property-specific issues before purchase.
