Kedron is an established inner-northern Brisbane suburb approximately 11km north of the CBD. Covering about 3.5 square kilometres, it is centred around Gympie Road and Kedron Brook. Neighbouring suburbs include Gordon Park, Stafford, Stafford Heights, Chermside West, Chermside, Wavell Heights, Wooloowin and Lutwyche.
Kedron developed from a semi-rural district into a residential suburb during the early twentieth century. The extension of the electric tramline to Kedron in 1914 encouraged further development, which continued through the interwar period. Today, the suburb includes traditional Queenslanders, post-war houses, renovated homes, newer infill development, townhouses and apartments.
Kedron had a population of 9,907 in 2021, up from 9,359 in 2016, an increase of 5.9%. The largest age group is 30–39 years, representing 17.9% of residents.
Couples with children make up 45.8% of households, followed by childless couples at 37.3% and single-parent households at 14.4%. Owner occupation increased from 53.5% in 2016 to 54.5% in 2021.
Kedron has a well-educated, professional population. Bachelor degree holders account for 36.9% of residents with recorded qualifications, while 31.7% of employed residents work in professional occupations. Around 24.6% of households earn more than $182,000 per year.
Gympie Road is Kedron’s main commercial corridor, with supermarkets, convenience retail, restaurants, cafés, medical services and other businesses. Smaller shops and services are scattered throughout the suburb, while nearby Westfield Chermside offers one of Brisbane’s largest retail, dining and entertainment precincts.
Kedron does not have a railway station, so public transport is primarily bus-based. Frequent services operate along Gympie Road and other arterial routes, connecting the suburb with the Brisbane CBD, Chermside and surrounding northside areas.
Gympie Road is the suburb’s main north-south arterial and connects with the Airport Link and Clem7 tunnel network, while Stafford Road provides an important east-west route. These roads offer convenient access across Brisbane but can create traffic and noise issues for nearby properties.
Kedron State School provides government primary education within the suburb and operates under an enrolment management plan. Kedron State High School is also located in the suburb and operates within a negotiated catchment area.
A significant cluster of Catholic schools is located around Turner Road, including Padua College, Mount Alvernia College and St Anthony’s Primary School. Buyers seeking access to a particular school should confirm current catchments and enrolment requirements for the individual property before purchasing.
Kedron has six parks covering approximately 6.8% of the suburb. Kedron Brook and its surrounding bikeway and open-space network are major recreational features, providing walking and cycling connections through Brisbane’s northern suburbs.
Local parks and sporting areas provide additional recreational space, while the Kedron Brook corridor offers valuable access to greenery despite the suburb’s relatively central location.
Kedron is mainly residential, although Gympie Road supports employment in retail, health, education and service businesses. The suburb is also well placed for major employment centres at Chermside, including The Prince Charles Hospital, as well as the Brisbane CBD and airport precinct.
An area known as Padua precinct (located in the Western part of the suburb, between Gympie, Stafford and Webster Roads is the most desirable part of Kedron due to its proximity to private schools.
Kedron Avenues (located east of Leckie Road) is another popular area known for its beautiful character homes.
Traffic noise can be an issue for properties close to major thoroughfares including Gympie Road, Stafford Road, Webster Road and Rode Road. Buyers should check the Brisbane City Council Flood Maps, as some areas (especially close to Kedron Brook) are susceptible to flooding.
